Armourcoat Polished Plaster<\/a> brings a refined elegance to the renovation of Washington D.C.\u2019s Duke Ellington School of the Arts, a visionary project by Cox Graae & Spack Architects and Lance Bailey & Associates. At the heart of the interior lies a striking four-storey atrium, anchored by the Duke Ellington Theatre \u2018egg\u2019\u2014a bold, oval-shaped structure that serves as the focal point of the space.<\/p>\n

Expertly hand-finished in Armuralia<\/a> by local specialists Senza Fine Inc., the outer shell of the \u2018egg\u2019 boasts a smooth, seamless surface that enhances the theatre\u2019s architectural presence. Across the project, more than 25,000ft\u00b2 of finishes were applied, extending through the theatre, cafeteria walls, and multi-level columns. Inspired by the rhythmic contrast of piano keys, the design team crafted a crisp white interior with black accents\u2014an elegant tribute to the legacy of legendary musician and Washington D.C. native, Edward Kennedy \u2018Duke\u2019 Ellington.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The choice to use Armourcoat came at the end of an extended process of exploring many options. The decision was important since the theatre is the centre piece at the heart of the school.<\/p>\n

We found a precedent in London of a similarly complex application and quickly became comfortable that Armourcoat was the right product for our project in terms of cost, schedule and aesthetics. The project team and client have been delighted with the end result. The finish is sophisticated and durable. We hope to have opportunities to use Armourcoat again in the future.<\/p>\n\n
